Too often we under-estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.-- Dr. Leo Buscaglia
If this statement is true, each of us has the potential to change the world! All it takes ismaking the time to do intentionally what we do all the time in that nearly unconscious state we call life. And when you change one life, the ripple effect can become a tidal wave that washes away the pain and anxiety of many lives lived on the edge of happiness and security.
I have learned in the last two years what the smallest encouragement can mean to someone who has great potential, but little hope. I became the mentor of a twenty-two year old single mother of a beautiful little girl. Jeannine and her baby moved into Gilead House with nothing but their clothes and a car that was held together with wire! They were alone, broke and frightened about the future. Through lots of hard work and the caring of untold hearts, the two of them are living a life that Jeannine could only dream about two years ago: a good job, a car, a home and the chance to go to college! They have been the recipients of hundreds of caring acts by people they barely know and some they have never met, all part of the Gilead House family.
Jeannine’s life changed the day she became part of the Gilead House family and, quite honestly, so did mine. I was like everyone else who under-estimated the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word… May I tell you what it has been like to be a mentor? What it felt like the first time Jeannine hugged me back, or how I cried when she told me that my caring gave her courage? It turned my life around.
If you would like to experience the power of simple acts of caring, become a mentor. It could turn your life around!
